Flying wires have always fascinated me. I was lucky enough to spend 20 plus years in California in silicon valley, in the computer industry. I was lucky enough to fly a large number of classic aircraft, from DC3’s to Beech 18s, from Stearmans to Travelairs, which gave me an appreciation for that classic period of aviation.

I spent many hours researching the production of Flying Wires and various types of fittings that were used in these fine classic aircraft.

The opportunity to be more involved in Flying Wires arose back in New Zealand in 2006 when a local company were involved in the production of WW1 Aircraft and were looking for a supplier of Flying Wires and Tie Rods for a static display.

The first Flying Wires we produced in 2006, from mild steel rod, using a 1000 ton press to produce the streamline shape. At 6 inches a time, production was slow.

Later I discovered a ‘Heath Robinson’ machine which looked as if it might produce Flying Wires. On account of its design, It was less than completely successful at producing Flying Wires. Back to the drawing board.

I was lucky enough to find two plate rolling mills in 2009 that had been making blanks for teaspoons and converted then to produce Flying Wires.
