Round Tie Rods are used as wing bracing wires in almost all fabric covered wings. Almost all WW1 aircraft fuselages employ round tie rods as fuselage bracing wires. Generally, each wire has both a left hand and a right hand thread, although some wing bracing wires (Pitts, Acrosport) go through the wing spar, so have right hand threads on both ends..
Aircraft such as Piper Cubs, Austers, TaylorCraft and others use round tie rods as tail brace wires. Some modern utility aircraft which have braced rail structure use a combination of streamline wires as upper brace wires and round wires as the lower brace wires.
American spec Tie Rods are available in sizes from 1/8” (AN701`) up to 3/8” (AN706) and can be produced from Stainless Steel or Carbon Steel. All threads are rolled for the optimum reliability, toughness and strength. For maximum toughness the thread area is swaged down to the diameter needed for rolling, and then the thread is rolled back up to the specified diameter.
British streamline wires are also available in thread sizes from 4BA to 3/8 BSF and conform to the AGS specifications .
Metric wires also available in 4mm, 5mm, 6mm 7mm and 9mm thread sizes.
Clevis fittings are also available. These American AN665 fittings are manufactured from Stainless Steel and then heat treated and tempered. These fittings are available in -21, -34, -46, -61 and -80A sizes and both left hand and right hand thread sizes are available.
